Creation of the Visa organization through Hock’s leadership can be seen to have come about through application of the principles of the learning organization.
One scene made a powerful impression on me–working to meet the deadline, they had a project plan on the wall – with an ad hoc marker of their progress, a coffee cup on a string. Anyone could move the progress marker forward or back as the situation changed. This visual tool kept the whole group aligned and on purpose. The individuals felt empowered to express their perception of reality, and motivated to find solutions to problems to keep moving the marker to the right to meet their deadline.
